It was a dark and stormy night... The world had been darkened by a colossal storm. One could barely see five meters ahead of them. In the distance, lightning could be seen striking at random spots throughout the town. A soft wind was blowing through the streets of New York City, whipping up leaves from the ground and painting each building in sickly greens and oranges. There were faint murmurs around him as he turned to look behind him before continuing on his way. As he made his way down one of those streets now devoid of any living soul with only broken branches to rest against, muffled shouts came from somewhere ahead of him... "What I would give to hear the sound of silence..." he mused as he continued on through the night. Whispered curses could be heard behind him. "It seems like years-" one woman said before her companion cut her off. "Don't talk like it's forever, little one, you can make it back to me." Another voice said almost painfully sweet. For a moment only silence filled the air; then came another part of that conversation. "But that wouldn't be the same..." the female said, clearly trying to hold back tears now. The man's voice was a low growl, a warning. "Don't start this now, Sarah- It's too dangerous out-" "But it's been so long... I can't even remember why we're doing this anymore." She stopped and took a deep breath before continuing. "We're only here to help the others." He couldn't tell which of them he wanted to talk to more. To hear the story from someone who had been here from the beginning, from those who had been born here, or from those who came later on, just as lost as he was- He paused for a moment as he felt a chill run through him. He turned around quickly and stared into the shadows but saw nothing... He continued on his way, thoughts racing through his head. "Are you sure this is the right way?" one of the voices in his head asked nervously. "Nope..." he said under his breath. "Not even a little bit, but it's the only way forward so-" he cut himself off as another voice interrupted him. "If you are lost then how are you our guide?" It was the woman again, she sounded so much more childish than when they had started this journey. "You're not lost." A gentle voice said. This one had more authority to it, his guide had some kind of power, he could feel it in his head like a subtle sting... "You are following the first steps of someone who has become lost." The first voice sounded confused now. "But if the first steps are the ones that lead to where you need to be then you must remain where you are until something else leads you there. You cannot run forward on your own like this, too much will happen-" The female interrupted once more with a sob. The male voice sighed and lowered his head as the female's sobs continued. cfa1e77820
